Background

For my class “Visual Principles of the Screen”, I learned fundamental graphic design and messaging principles. For my project, I produced a robust, researched website that included mobile application prototypes.

Task

Make an archive relating to racial justice.

Approach

I chose to make a website focusing on Black led fashion to highlight amazingly talented designers who might not be widely known. The purpose of my website is to elevate the work of people who are underrepresented in the fashion industry and provide people an easy way to support designers of color by learning about Black designers, purchasing their designs, and becoming involved in relevant social initiatives.

I designed the website on Sketch and enabled it on Invision. I started by sketching the website on paper, then building various wireframes, and refining it as I worked further. This project allowed me to learn about UX/UI design and made me more sensitive to the usability of archived information on websites I visit. I also learned of integrating navigational and informational components in web design. Lastly, this project also enabled me to understand the importance of user testing. I found that when one is staring at the screen for hours creating a website, it is easy if one is not careful to overlook details that a user would spot. User testing helps the web designer see from the user’s point of view so that as a designer, one can optimize a website for the user.
